Early Italian Tempera Painting Technique
Once again, led by the renowned conservator Herman van Putten, I have acquired both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice about the intricacies of Early Italian tempera painting techniques. At the Ateliergebouw, where the reconstruction workshop took place, we were very fortunate to have two pieces of Early Italian tempera paintings, which we could scrutinize the techniques in addition to a thorough understanding of the theories behind them. The following series of pictures shows the procedures and layer build-up in replication of Giovanni di Paolo’s The Blessed Pietro of Siena (1447-1449), which belongs to the Catherijneconvent (Utretcht).
Progress summary of the reconstruction.
