My Tear Mending Workshop Experience
Diving into the enchanting world of art restoration, the tear-mending workshop, focusing on the intricacy of thread-by-thread tear mending technique, proved to be a magical journey. Under the guidance of Petra Demuth, we have unraveled the historical threads of the technique; we explored the instruments, joining strategies, and reweaving techniques that bring torn canvases back to life.
The workshop delved into the scientific side of restoration, addressing the physical and mechanical aspects, experimental setups, and adhesive testing. Strategies for adhesive selection and the focus on supplementary support with bridging threads and inserts added layers of fascination.
In the practical sessions, the magic came to life. With hands-on demonstrations and individual guidance, we translated theory into tangible workmanship. The workshop wasn't just about fixing tears; it was about stitching together a narrative that connects the past, present, and future of art conservation.
Below you can find my first dive into mending a tear in a plain-weave canvas with white acrylic paints. Acknowledging that perfection wasn't achieved within a mere three days, I'm embracing the learning process. Rest assured, the journey to mastery is well underway, and more dedicated practice sessions are underway!
