Traditional Gilding Techniques with Hubert Baija

Over the last four days, I've found myself immersed in the enchanting world of traditional gilding techniques, guided by the beloved Hubert Baija. Renowned as a consultant for museums and collectors in the realm of frame conservation and gilding, Hubert is not only a seasoned expert but also a passionate teacher. With a rich background as the senior conservator of frames and gilding at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam for three decades until his retirement in 2019, Hubert has also brought his wealth of knowledge to the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto as a senior conservator. He is also a committed educator with years of teaching experience at the Campbell Center and the University of Amsterdam.

This workshop has been a fascinating journey into a decorative technique with roots dating back 4,500 years to ancient Egypt. The hands-on nature of the class has provided a comprehensive exploration of gold-leafing skills. From working on bare wood to witnessing the transformation into a gilded masterpiece, I’ve delved into the meticulous processes of preparing sample boards, priming and gilding frames, crafting ornaments, and perfecting finishing techniques. And let's not forget the delightful dive into the history of picture frames! In the featured photo, we have just finished preparing our own gesso after four hours of non-stop stirring.

Adding an extra layer of enjoyment to this experience, it has been a heartwarming father-daughter bonding adventure for me and my father, Fu Chang, a fervent enthusiast in furniture restoration and refinishing. With decades of experience in furniture sales and trading, he has grown tired of the world of fast-paced consumerism; he cares deeply about sustainability and strives to give abandoned furniture a “second life.” You can admire some of his works here. This workshop has not only deepened our connection over shared interests in old wooden materials and antiques but has also sparked lively intellectual discussions that don't often find a space at home. Who knew a workshop could be both educational and a source of family fun!

Father-daughter bonding moment

We have both enjoyed all the hands-on practice and Huub’s wealth of knowledge. As an indication, the ear-to-ear smiles.
